Darkness Comes

  FEBRUARY 13

MATTHEW 5:14_A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Why is it that a city set on a hill cannot be hid? The answer is light. No matter how high the hill, or how thick its botanical surroundings, the lights of a whole city on a hilltop will shine through the darkness.

Unless the city is without power, or kerosene, or fire, the lights will shine. Unless every business and every family operates from dawn to dusk, the lights will shine. The lights shine for one reason – because darkness comes. Every day, darkness comes.

The primary purpose of any light is to dispel and overcome darkness. What a beautiful calling! Jesus calls His disciples to be light … to the world … to shine from a hilltop … and that light cannot be hid.

Think of your light as hope for the hopeless.

Think of your light as a guide to the lost.

Think of your light as healing for the sick of soul.

Think of your light as freedom for the captive.

The primary purpose of any light is to dispel and overcome darkness.

Surely if there is anything you need to become, it is light in this dark world. Spiritual darkness comes to the world when lights are ousted. Someone needs to turn on the lights! If you consider yourself to be a Jesus-disciple then you are called to turn on your light!

  PRAYER

God of Glory, Thank You for changing my life from darkness to light. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

Christ’s light dispels darkness—He will do that for me!

Mixed With Contaminates

 FEBRUARY 10

MATTHEW 5:13_if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?  It is henceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

It is my understanding that on its own salt will never lose its flavor, even with a long amount of time. However, salt can lose its flavor if it is mixed with something that contaminates.

James 1:8 (KJV), “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” What is a double minded man? A person who attempts to live the Jesus-disciple life while satisfying desires with the world’s ways. You’ve heard of someone living a double life? Some criminals have lived it for a long while before being caught. They usually live like this because they cannot be satisfied in either life. In the long run they fail in both.

Contaminated salt is not good for anything. It is neither a preservative, nor a flavor enhancer, nor cause thirst. All its wonderful potential was lost by contamination. Jesus is a restorer. Jesus can restore all the original qualities to a contaminated soul who comes with a repentant heart. Jesus is all about forgiveness, new life, and peace.

Now how do you feel about being called the salt of the earth?

  PRAYER

God of my Life, Thank You that You can restore me from any contaminates I have allowed in my life. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

Christ is a restorer – He can restore all my past!

Getting Salty

FEBRUARY 7

MATTHEW 5:13_Ye are the salt of the earth but…

How would you feel if someone referred to you as a salt-of-the-earth kind of person? Would you feel complimented or insulted? If Jesus made the reference be sure it was a compliment, and a very high one at that!

Why would Jesus want you to be like salt? Have you ever heard of salting food to preserve it? The water moisture in food can attract and grow mold and bacteria. Salt dries out the moisture thus salt is a good food preservative. Salt is a natural preservative – nothing artificial. I realize there is much controversy about all kinds of foods, salt being one of them, but if it’s a natural food just stay with the lesson of moderation in all things.

Remember, you consist of three parts, body, soul (mind, will, emotions), and spirit. Whenever one part is neglected, your overall health can be damaged. The Bible gives healthy advice for all your parts. They all connect. What damages the soul can make the spirit sick. What damages the spirit can make the body sick. If you’ve ever heard of holistic healing, that’s what it is.

In this particular teaching Jesus is addressing the spirit.

  PRAYER

Mighty God, Help me be a spiritual preservative to all the people You bring in my path. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

Christ is a preservative for my spirit—I want to be salt!

Open Your Eyes

JANUARY 28

MATTHEW 5:9_for they shall be called the children of God.

How do you find peace within yourself? Peace comes from connecting the soul (mind, will, emotions) with the spirit. When the soul connects with the spirit which is connected to Christ, it experiences confidence and security – regardless of circumstances.

When peace is dependent upon life’s circumstances being exactly as you want, seldom will you find inward peace.

Open your eyes. See Jesus at work in your life. Hear Him calling. Focus on Jesus in the midst of your storms (physical, spiritual, or psychological). Believe Jesus is who the Bible says He is. Experience the peace that overcomes life’s circumstances.

John 16:33 (KJV), “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me [Jesus] ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

That verse says a lot. This life will not always go the way you want. Life comes with trouble. Jesus lets you know that He’s got this – no worries. That doesn’t mean you won’t hurt, moan, groan, and cry. If you didn’t do any of those you wouldn’t have trouble.

Agree with Jesus and let Him overcome your world – you will be a child of God!

PRAYER

Dear Jesus, I praise You for overcoming the world. I know You can overcome the storms which rage within my soul. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

Christ gives peace—To my soul!

Time and Mercy

JANUARY 21

MATTHEW 5:7_Blessed are the merciful…

What will you look like if you become merciful? Suppose someone has ridiculed and scorned you because you made a choice for moral purity. When that person falls into immorality there is depression, possibly despair. Will you come with mercy? Will you offer a kind word? Words of hope? Will you lay aside the pain done to you?

There is no bondage quite like immorality. Immorality afflicts the heart and soul. The damage can cause deep destruction. The damage inside the heart and soul spell b-e-t-r-a-y-a-l. This is more than betrayal to someone else’s heart but includes betrayal to your own heart. Most of all God’s purity plan has been betrayed. People in moral bondage need mercy. Immorality comes with guilt. Guilt causes that heart and soul destruction.

True mercy, like that of Jesus, brings with it freedom. To offer mercy without freedom is to place a Band-Aid on a deep wound which requires stitches. A Band-Aid will not stop you from bleeding to death.

Mercy involves giving lots of something we tend to hoard for ourselves – time.

PRAYER

Merciful Jesus, Help me be merciful and give my time. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

Christ is true mercy—Mercy requires my time!
